TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of human rights activists are believed to have personally handed President Jokowi the civilian death toll report due to Indonesia’s military operation in Nduga, Papua. This took place during the president’s visit to Canberra on Monday, February 10.

One of the most vocal activists on the Papua issue, Veronica Koman, also officially urged the president to entirely halt every military operation commenced in Papua.

“Our team in Canberra managed to handover these documents directly to President Jokowi,” Veronica Koman claimed in her press release on Monday.

Moreover, Veronica Koman said she has handed over 57 identities and locations of what she considers as Papuan political prisoners who are currently detained in seven Indonesian cities.

She said President Jokowi in 2015 pardoned five Papuan political prisoners, which received a positive reception from members of the public and was deemed a new hope for Papua.

“However, in [President Jokowi’s second term], 57 Papuans were charged with treason and are waiting for trial. This may worsen the conflicts in Papua,” said Veronica Koman.

She claims the president is currently in possession of the data which consists of names of prisoners and the death toll of Papuan military operations. “This includes the names of 110 children from a total of 243 dead civilians. Will the president continue to ignore our demands.”
