TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts heavy rains with lightning over the coming week. For the weekend, the BMKG specifically called on five provinces to prepare for floods.

The five provinces are DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Central Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi.

"The people are advised to be wary of and prepared for possible floods, landslides, strong winds, fallen trees, and slippery roads." BMKG deputy for Meteorology, Mulyono R. Prabowo, said in a written statement, Friday, January 24.

Until the end of this month, rainstorms are also forecasted to also hit North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, Banten, Yogyakarta, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, and Papua.

According to Mulyono, the potential for heavy rains came from cyclonic circulations around the Indian Ocean south of Lampung, which led to the formation of convergence patterns and wind bends in western Indonesia.

In addition, the unstable atmospheric conditions in Indonesia cause moist air from the lower layers easily lifted into the atmosphere.

"These two factors have led to an increased potential for rain clouds' growth in western Indonesia," he said.

The public is advised to stay alert and watch out for new information from BMKG's official channels: http://www.bmkg.go.id, Twitter @infoBMKG, and hotline (021-6546315/18).
