TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok went on Twitter to convey his sympathy for the victims of the widespread floods affecting multiple areas in Jakarta and the surrounding cities (Jabodetabek).

“Hope the floods to quickly recede and the situation improving," he tweeted on Friday, January 3, which was responded by over six thousand users.

The Pertamina chief commissioner also called for people living alongside the city’s drainage basins (DAS) to maintain awareness and keep a close look at surroundings once rain falls again.

At the end of April 2019, Ahok revealed that in the past, floods formed in Jakarta due to water pumps that were not operated in time and asserted that such devices must be activated before the flood levels rise.

“I understand mining, in mining, if you turn on the pumps way too late it could not be rushed as it is turned on. I guess the floods could be caused by flood pumps that were too late to be activated,” said Basuki in Mentengon April 30.
