TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The operations at Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma airport is hoped to resume normal on Thursday, January 2, after the airport’s main runway was submerged underwater due to the mass flood caused by constant rainfall on Wednesday that affected the Jakarta Greater Area.
“If the weather improves and no more floods from rivers in Jakarta, God willing, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport’s operations will return to normal on Thursday. Hopefully, no more water will fill the runway,” said Halim Perdanakusuma Airport’s Executive General Manager, Nandang Sukarna on Wednesday.
The airbase’s operations were forced to be completely halted on Wednesday due to the amount of floodwater covering the runway that overwhelmed the airport’s drainage systems. The amount of water covering the airport’s runway was nearly 30-centimeters, which is enough to cause security concerns for landing airplanes.
“We were actually affected by conditions in the airport’s vicinity. The drainage system was not able to be optimized due to the environment surrounding Halim Perdanakusuma that was fully-flooded,” said Nandang.
