TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG announced the weather forecast at the New Year's Eve 2020.

The agency's deputy of the meteorology department, R Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo, said Indonesia should be aware of the impacts of Typhoon Phanfone that destroyed the Philippines during Christmas.

More than 58,000 people were evacuated from their homes before the storm, which caused widespread property damage, and more than 15,000 were stranded at ports when ferries were suspended.

The typhoon left the Philippines on Wednesday night and was out over the South China Sea, moving west.

"Typhoon Phanfone is still ongoing. The center of the typhoon continues to move for the next 3 to 4 days, heading to the west or northwest," he said at a press conference in Jakarta, Friday, Dec. 27.

The typhoon was predicted to affect Indonesian seas. Sea wave was expected to be around 2 to 4 meters high especially in Natuna Sea, Tarempa, and Karimata Strait.

Prabowo called on the public to increase alert for possible high waves, especially for those who celebrate New Year's Eve at the beach.

He also suggested the people limit outdoor activities as rain with moderate to high intensity was predicted to fall in the afternoon until night in a number of tourist destinations.
