TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia E-commerce Association (idEA) commented on the Finance Ministry’s decision to lower the top ceiling on duty-free imports from 7 US dollars to 3 US Dollars per shipment.

idEA public policy and government communication manager Rofi Uddarojat said the association will study the effects of the changes toward the country’s e-commerce industry.

“Our partners with cross border facilities are not that significant, but some will surely be affected,” said Rofi at the Finance Ministry’s headquarters on Monday, December 23. He further said that he will communicate with cross-border traders.

As of the changes itself, Rofi sees the duty-free import top ceiling revision as a means from the government to support local small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) and local products. He revealed that import issues are not that significant in his association as over 50 percent of its partners are Indonesian SME products.

The Finance Ministry’s duty-free import cap revision means that importing any goods valued around Rp42,000 will be subject to import taxes.
