TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim said the establishment of competency assessment and character survey was aimed at evaluating schools, rather than students.

“We have set a national standard for competency assessment and character survey. So there will be national benchmarks. But what we will assess is not the students, but schools,” said Nadiem before reporters in Jakarta on Monday, December 23.

If the assessment results show that many students have not achieved the minimum competency, then the school needs to be assisted in order to produce a better learning process, he underlined.

The implementation will still require a computer. Thus, he added, there was a misperception that the replacement of the national examination or known as the UN could save the budget.

"We don't know yet whether the implementation of this assessment will reduce the budget or not because the process is the same as the national exam. Students still use computers [for the tests]," Nadiem said.

The assessment reportedly will reflect the quality of learning in a school, which consists of tests on students’ literacy and numerical competence. And also, a character survey. These are part of the four points of Merdeka Belajar educational policy announced by Nadiem Makarim that will kick off in 2021.
