TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko spoke up about the government’s plan to reestablish the Reconciliation and Truth Commission (KKR) in a bid to unveil perpetrators of severe human rights violations in the past.

According to him, the government will not let the past cases to be forgotten but expected forgiveness from the victims.

“Forgive, but not forget. We will not let them be just forgiven and forgotten. Not like that. Because whatever the case is, it is the history of Indonesia,” he said at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday, December 16.

He said that the government was seeking the best concept to establish the commission and planned to hold a meeting with victims of human rights violation cases. “Because this is not a one-sided case,” the former Indonesian Military (TNI) chief added.

He further said he would have a discussion with the former dean of Harvard Law School, Martha Louise Minow, tonight, December 16, whom he considered as the right figure to be asked for inputs for the government.

“We need a benchmark and need to explore the experience of the professor in dealing with similar issues in several other countries,” Moeldoko said.

The plan to reorganize the KKR was again brought up after President Jokowi inaugurated ministers of the Indonesia Onward Cabinet.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md vowed he would form the KKR to resolve the lingering cases of past human rights violations.

The KKR was regulated in Law No. 27 of 2004, which was then revoked by the Constitutional Court (MK) in 2006 for lacking legal certainty.
