National Exams to Undergo Major Revamp, Not Dropped: Ministry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Research and Development Bureau of the Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry Totok Suprayitno, asserted that the national exams - known as UN/Ujian Nasional - will not be dropped, but will have its format revamped.
"The UN will not be erased but revised with a better evaluation or scoring system. We intend to have this new scoring system to cater to students' reasoning skills," said Totok in Jakarta on Thursday, December 12, 2019.
Totok added that the national exams in its history have always been dominated by the elements of mastering school subjects. Totok believed that the future will need students who have the ability to reason and think critically.
Totok also said that the national exams cannot be eliminated entirely as it is mandated in the country's Constitution.
Concerning the possible lack of motivation among students with the absence of national exams, Totok said that a student's ability cannot be improved only through an exam, but through their daily studies.
Starting from 2021, the education and cultural affairs ministry will move away from holding national exams at the end of a semester and change it to mid-semester competence and character tests.
