TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released the Programme for International Student Assessment, known as PISA 2018, in Paris on Tuesday, December 3.

The program evaluated worldwide educational systems by measuring 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading once every three years. In this report, China ranks first with Singapore taking second place.

As for Indonesia, the results have not changed significantly since entering the international program back in 2001 by consistently being in the bottom end of the rankings.

Indonesian pupils’ reading ability scored 371 which is below the OECD average of 487; mathematics also scored below the average of 487 with 379; while science scored 389, which is well below the average of 489.

The OECD report also suggests that a small number of Indonesian pupils have the necessary abilities to excel in one subject, while at the same time not many pupils achieved the minimum level of proficiency in one school subject.

Responding to this, Education and Cultural Affairs Nadiem Makarim asked not to put aside the PISA assessment on Indonesia.

“PISA is the real confirmation on the literacy problem which we know all too well,” said the Minister who called for strategic steps that needed to be done to follow up the PISA report.

The study also found that children who come from financially fortunate families will end up being better than those who are less fortunate. The PISA report also states that 64 percent of students from poor families are taking school that is struggling to provide for their students.

The climate of Indonesia’s education is also less than great after the study revealed 41 percent of students were bullied several times in a month.

The PISA 2018 report also explained that Indonesia students’ dreams still follow their previous generation.
