TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the inauguration ceremony of the University of Indonesia (UI) rector, Professor Ari Kuncoro, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Nadiem Makarim expressed his plan to liberate students to freely choose studies based on their desire, ability, and interest.

“University students taking classes that are compatible with their interests. We must make this change,” said Nadiem on Wednesday, December 4.

He added that the educational competence of a university in providing for its students is crucial in realizing President Jokowi’s vision; to help develop superior human resources. In order to do so, he deemed it important to improve the country’s educational regulation and bureaucracy.

“The interpretation of the president’s vision comes down to two aspects; education liberty and teachers as driving factors,” said the Minister. “The next five years will surely be uncomfortable for any educational institution. But this change must be made.”

In terms of teachers as driving forces, Nadiem Makarim said it is reflected in teachers or lecturers who constantly grow their knowledge to improve the learning activities in classes or outside the confines of classes and involve their students to partake in external projects that will elevate the experience.
