TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD reminded law enforcers to not carry out law perversions as he fears the current situation shows a tendency toward a legal system that is being industrialized.

“Many law enforcement practices are now becoming a ‘law industry’, instead of industrial law,” said Mahfud MD in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, December 3.

According to Mahfud, a ‘law industry’ refers to the process where state authorities meticulously nitpick other people’s legal mistakes and people proven guilty are altered to become innocent.

“The prime example I often mention is when a person has won a civil offense up to the Supreme Court. But the execution will not follow through as law enforcers will divert it to become a criminal offense. Even though the case has been concluded,” said Mahfud.

The Coordinating Minister ended his call by reminding lawyers, police personnel, prosecutors, and judges to not treat the country’s law as an industry that can be utilized to achieve personal gains.

“Industrial law exists, but the law industry shall not exist,” said Mahfud MD.
