TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Chairman, Ahmad Taufan Damanik, said that there are not enough regional governments in the district or city level that have adopted human rights principles in developing its region.

“It may not even reach ten percent,” said Ahmad amidst the Human Rights Festival held in Jember District, on Tuesday, November 19.

According to him, regional administrations have not considered human rights principles, which may potentially give birth to discriminatory policies towards vulnerable groups such as women, children, minority groups, and people with disabilities.

Komnas HAM reported that there were 1,713 reports of possible human rights violations in 2018 with the majority of reports filed against regional administrations (106 cases), the police institution (394 cases), and corporations with 126 cases.

“These numbers go to show that there are problems within society that are not able to be solved by the regional administration,” said Taufik.
