TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal, and Security Mahfud MD received the visit of four New Zealand parliamentarians at his office in Jakarta, Tuesday, November 19.

Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand, Tantowi Yahya, said issues discussed in the meeting were related to Papua and Indonesia’s commitment to solving past human rights violations.

“Human rights issues for developed countries such as New Zealand are necessary. So we thank the Minister for explaining that in detail,” said Tantowi, who accompanied Mahfud during the meeting.

According to Tantowi, New Zealand parliamentarians were only exposed to information regarding the issue from the press. After meeting Mahfud, he added, they finally acknowledged the Indonesian government’s serious commitment to settle cases of human rights violations, including in Papua.

Tantowi said the Coordinating Minister also clarified news published by foreign media that the alleged violations were committed by law enforcers against civilians.

“That is our effort to enforce the law in a bid to protect Indonesian people. So our law enforcers take firm actions against security intruders, not civilians,” Tantowi asserted.
