TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In response to the deadly incident involving GrabWheels, Grab Indonesia as the e-scooter operator and the Jakarta provincial administration planned to build special lanes of the personal transportation at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex, Senayan, measuring 6 kilometers in length.

“This is the city administration’s principle to collaborate with many parties, including to build special lanes for personal transportation such as electric scooters, bicycles, etc.,” said the head of the Traffic Unit of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Priyanto, in Sudirman, South Jakarta, Monday, November 18.

Priyanto outlined the six-kilometer lanes would be made on the sidewalks at a width of 1.5 meters. The lanes would be marked with signs and color paint.

He further explained that the lanes would also serve as bicycle lanes that were currently being built by the city administration. Jakarta has opened up 63-kilometer lanes thus far.

Grab Indonesia's public affairs head Tri Sukma Anreiano said the construction of the personal transportation lanes was aimed at controlling the use of GrabWheels.

"Riders will later use designated lanes sans causing harm to other sidewalk users," he said, adding that the lanes would be integrated with other transportation modes such as MRT, LRT, and Transjakarta.
