TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Five fishermen from the Papua provincial capital of Jayapura are scheduled to be tried in the court of law in neighboring Papua New Guinea (PNG) for allegedly conducting illegal fishing activities on Monday (Nov 11).
The five fishermen were arrested separately while fishing using four motorboats in the waters of PNG, stated Martamba Tobing, acting consular of the Indonesian Consulate in Vanimo, the capital of Sandaun Province in PNG, on Friday.
Four of the five fishermen were taken into arrest on Oct. 21, while the other one was apprehended on the following day, he remarked.
The five fishermen are identified as Faisal, La Toto, Jufri, Arjun, and Hamzah.
He confirmed that the wife of one of the fishermen had visited her husband held in custody in Vanimo.
"It is true that the family of one of the fishermen visited Vanimo, and the Indonesian Consulate in Vanimo helped her to meet her husband, who is standing trial," he added.
