Minister Luhut Pandjaitan Lifts Nickel Ore Ban

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, lifted the ban on nickel ore exports from corporations that were initially suspected to have violated the export quota, which was eventually deemed innocent.
“The export ban has been lifted from corporations that did not violate the rule,” said Minister Luhut in Jakarta on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Following a meeting with stakeholders, Minister Luhut said a number of corporations can continue to export its nickel ore products. However, the ban will still be effective for corporations that are allegedly guilty for exceeding the nickel ore quota.
Luhut explained that the government is hoping to push for a more integrated industry to boost a larger added value for the country.
“See Freeport; we found its subsidiaries can obtain 10-15 times the added value. I just reported it to the President to push for an integrated industry. Now it is ongoing,” said Luhut Pandjaitan.
The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) says that there will be further steps taken regarding nickel ore exports, especially for those that are proven to violate the export quota ban.
