Intolerance Hampers National Development, Says Defense Observer

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Observer on state defense, Connie Rahakundini Bakrie, said that the issue of intolerance remains as one aspect hampering Indonesia’s national development and resistance. She argued that weaknesses pulling the country back from reaching its national interest still remains.
“The most highlighted [issue] today is the human development that is hampered by intolerance,” said Connie in a dialogue about national defense held by NasDem Party in Jakarta, Tuesday, Oct. 29.
One of the factors strengthening intolerance according to Connie is the misconception regarding religiosity that constantly convolutes with the country’s governance. This concept of religiosity has taken Indonesia’s national interest a step back, instead of moving it forward.
“One of the signs is the ample rejection toward a non-Muslim leader,” said Connie.
She maintained that the country will face a new type of war happens on social media, which sees a war of information transmitted to all types of communication media.
“The war is in our hands, on social media. The internet’s virtual room has become a medium of war,” said the president of the Indonesia Institute for Maritime Studies.
