Defense Minister Prabowo Stays as Gerindra Chairman

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prabowo Subianto will continue to hold his position as chairman of Gerindra Party, even though he has been appointed as Minister of Defense. Gerindra deputy chair Edhy Prabowo said there is no prohibition on ministers to have dual political positions.
"Yes, yes, he still is (the chairman)," Edhy said at the Presidential Palace Complex on Wednesday, October 23.
Unlike the previous period, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi allows his cabinet ministers to keep their current positions in political parties while serving term in office.
Three party leaders were elected as ministers. Aside from Prabowo, there are also Golkar Party chair Airlangga Hartarto as Coordinating Minister Economy Affairs and PPP acting chairman Suharso Monoarfa as Head of Bappenas.
Jokowi said it is not a problem to have chairmen of political parties as ministers in the 'Indonesia Maju' Cabinet. The president said that the important thing is for these ministers to be able to allocate their time well.
