TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The newly-appointed Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister for the period of 2019-2024, Edhy Prabowo, vowed that he would resume the working programs of his predecessor Susi Pudjiastuti, including the policy of sinking foreign fishing boats caught for poaching in the country’s waters.

Edhy opined the illegal boat-sinking policy was not a bad idea and worthy to be resumed. He asserted that he would prioritize local fishers’ welfare, instead of foreign fishers’.

“[Continuing] boat-sinking policy, why not? It is not carried out recklessly, isn’t it? There must be reasons,” said Edhy at the ministry building, Wednesday, October 23.

The Gerindra top politician also promised that he would optimize the former minister’s programs and make up the shortcomings. There would be no unnecessary change.

“In our opinion, Bu Susi has many remarkable superiorities. I would not be rash. I would ask the experts about cantrang or trawl, fish bombing, and others,” Edhy remarked.

He went on to say that he would focus on bringing prosperity for local fishermen and execute President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s vision, which was having a close relationship with fishermen.
