Jokowi Aspires for Modest Presidential Inauguration Ceremony

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo reportedly has asked the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) to hold a modest ceremony of the presidential and vice-presidential inauguration slated to take place on October 20.
“I said that the inauguration ceremony should be held in a simple and modest way, but without reducing the profoundness of the ceremony itself,” said Widodo after meeting with MPR leaders today on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
MPR Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has also issued a ban on any form of public protests during the ceremony that will see foreign country leaders present at the MPR headquarters.
“The success of the inauguration will send a positive message to the international community, which will help our economy,” said Bambang.
Country leaders set to be present in the ceremony include those from ASEAN countries, the Australian Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister of China.
President Joko Widodo also announced that he will not bar his volunteers from conducting public parades after the presidential inauguration ceremony.
