Earthquake Strikes Bolaang Mongondow, Ambon Early Monday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.3 magnitude earthquake was detected in waters of southeast Tutuyan, East Bolaang Mongondow of North Sulawesi, early hours of Monday, Oct. 14.

The quake was centered at 0.15 degrees south latitude and 124.77 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

Albeit its epicenter was 102 kilometers away from the ground, the tremor was felt quite hard in Bolaang Mongondow up to level III of the MMI scale, as well as in East Bolaang Mongondow, Bolaang Mongondow Selatan, Minahasa, South Minahasa, Bitung, Tondano, and Kotamobagu.

Meanwhile, Ambon saw another aftershock earlier today. The quake, measured at the magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale, was centered on land at 18 kilometers east waters of Ambon at 03:45 local time.

The tremor, which was felt at the level III of MMI, was the aftershock of the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit Ambon last month. To date, the strong quake has generated more than 1,300 aftershocks.
