TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The air quality over at the City of Palembang on Friday, Oct. 11, has once again worsened due to the haze from neighboring regions in South Sulawesi that are combating land and forest fires.

Thick smog could be seen cowering over the city, which caused visibility levels to drop significantly.

The intensity of smog increased since Thursday afternoon following light rains in a number of areas.

“This haze is from Banyuasin I, Tulung Selapan, and Mesuji that are located southeast of Palembang City,” said the head of Palembang’s Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Airport meteorology station, Bambang Beny Setiaji.

The air pollution index at the city currently sits on the level of 359, which is categorized as dangerous, equalling to 309 microgram/meter PM 2.5.

South Sulawesi state agencies say the smoke’s intensity continued through the night and had actually increased due to the 414 hotspots for the past 24-hours.
