TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of asylum seekers organize a demonstration today, Oct. 10, before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) building on Jalan Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta.

According to one of the demonstrators, Muhammad Ali, at the location today, “There are some 400 people present.”

Ali explains the mass of today’s protest is not only refugees who have been evacuated in ex-Kodim building, Kalideres, but also those from other regions.

In the rally, he went on, they demand UNHCR keep their promises to provide aid as agreed. The commission also does not fulfill the rights of asylum seekers in Indonesia.

Ali mentions that since the last data registration in August, the UNHCR does not offer any development. “Last time UNHCR reaches [us] is when the registration several months ago,” he added.

According to Ali, he and other asylum seekers will stay in Kebon Sirih until the UNHCR meets them and fulfill the promises. “This has taken a long time,” he said.
