TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PPP Party deputy Achmad Baidowi responded to the candidacy of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son, Gibran Rakabuming, and son-in-law, Bobby Nasution, in the 2020 regional election (Pilkada).
According to him, the situation affirms the right for Indonesian citizens’ political rights.
“As for talks about political dynasty, there are no governing rules in the Law against it. [political dynasty] was initially banned but was then annulled by the Constitutional Court (MK),” said Baidowi on Thursday.
He asserted that the concept of a regional-head election gives room and opportunity for the general society to run in the political stage, as long as that individual fulfills every requirement needed, either backed by a political party or independently.
“Let alone the president’s family members, an average person has the same right to run in the regional elections. This is the consequence of living under democracy,” said Achmad Baidowi.
Previously reported, Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming signed up to be a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) for the upcoming 2020 Surakarta Mayor Election. This is the same political party that has backed the political career of Gibran’s father.
