TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) head of planning and partnership, Esrom Hamonangan, opined the quality of the country’s polluted air has not been improved over the years.

“No improvement in the quality of polluted air over the years,” said Esrom during a public discussion on air pollution and human rights violations in Sarinah building, Thursday, October 3.

Esrom explained the source of air pollution emissions reached 19,165 tons per day generated by the number of vehicles as the main source. From the figure, 44.53 percent emitted from motorized vehicles.

Additionally, Greenhouse Gas (GAG) that emits carbon dioxide (CO2) amounted to 318,840 tons per day–45.72 percent of which from bus transportation.

Esrom, therefore, suggested that the government revises and enforces Regulation No. 41/1999 on air pollution control in order to protect the public and the ecosystem. Besides, the Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System (AAQMS) is necessary and must be developed, as well as data optimization.

“If we want to combat air pollution, stop the source, and that is the government’s job,” said Esrom. He also called on the public to participate in reducing air pollution by not using private vehicles.
