TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko '"Jokowi" Widodo said he will hold a meeting with students’ representatives who staged protests demanding several law revisions on Friday, September 27.

“Tomorrow we will meet the students, especially those from BEM (the Student Executive Body),” said Widodo at State Palace, Jakarta, Thursday, September 26.

Since Monday, students from various universities took to the streets, rejecting several draft bills such as on criminal code, the correctional system, and lands and demanding annulment of newly-amended KPK Law.

Widodo said he appreciated the students’ movement and perceived their recommendations as the top notes to improve poor things in Indonesia, he added. However, he demanded the students maintain public order during the demonstration.

“The most important thing is, do not destroy public facilities and practice anarchy acts,” the President underlined.

When asked about acts of violence committed by authorities against the students during the rally, Joko Widodo affirmed he would reach National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian for the talk.

“In handling every demonstration, non-repressive and measurable acts must be taken,” Jokowi pressed, “but if there is anarchy, firm acts are necessary.”
