TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Legal Commission Deputy Erma Suryani Ranik says that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed no objections upon erasing the Article overseeing defamation against the President and Vice President mentioned in the revised criminal code draft bill (RKUHP).
Erma said that this was expressed by the president himself in Monday’s meeting with House of Representatives (DPR) members at the Merdeka Palace.
“In the meeting, President Jokowi specifically mentioned the Article on defamation against the president. He said that such Article does not need to exist,” said Erma at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex today.
Despite the president’s persistence, Erma said DPR members insisted to pass the article as it is not just aimed to protect Jokowi personally but to protect the nation.
The article overseeing defamation against the President became subject of numerous criticisms after it is seen to be colonialist, added by the fact that it was once annulled by the Constitutional Court.
