TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - The Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK) plans to impose additional criminal sanctions against corporations guilty of causing land and forest fires in the form of asset-stripping.
KLHK’s director-general of law enforcement Rasio Ridho Sani said corporations that contributed to the 2015 forest fires could well be handed this sanction, especially if the burned lands are now used as concession lands or plantations.
Rasio explains that the additional punishment is a deterrent overseen under Article 119 of Law 32/2009 on the protection of the environment.
“We will impose additional penalties through asset-stripping. We will investigate cases that happened years back,” said Rasio on Monday, September 23.
