TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy head, Laode M. Syarief, lamented the non-transparency of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government in discussing the draft of KPK Law revisions.

“This is a bad precedence over the state administration of Indonesia,” said Laode via a short message to Tempo, Thursday, September 12

DPR and the government, he added, quietly conspired to restrict the authorities of the anti-graft body without consultation. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had also appointed his two ministers to represent the government in the discussion.

Referred to the Presidential Letter No. R-42/Pres/09/2019 on the KPK Law revisions, the two are Legal and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly and the Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PANRB) Minister Syafruddin.

Syarif along with four other executive members and the KPK employee's association (KPK WP) rejected the draft bill. They asserted that nine points in the draft revision potentially weaken the KPK, including the independence of KPK employee, the formation of the supervisory board, and the permission of wiretapping.

KPK, Syarief went on, will demand a meeting with the government and DPR. “We don’t know which articles to be revised,” he said.
