TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has declared the national mourning day for three days following the passing of the third Indonesian President BJ Habibie. State secretary Pratikno said that it was mandated in the law.

"We have set three days of national mourning as mandated by the law, starting tomorrow until September 14," said Pratikno at Habibie's residence in Kuningan, South Jakarta, today, September 11.

The state secretary called on the people, state officials, and governmental offices to wave a half-pole flag during the mourning period. "The 3-day is national mourning days."

Habibie died after receiving treatment at the ICU of Gatot Subroto Army Hospital since Monday for declining organ function and heart failure. He was 83.

He was the Indonesian President during the transition period of the New Order to Reformasi (reform) era in the country. Habibie replaced Soeharto who was forced to resign.

During his life, Habibie also held a number of important positions including the CEO of Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara (IPTN)—the former name of Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI), Minister of Research and Technology, and Vice President to Soeharto in 1998.
