Australians Deported for Participating in Papua Protest

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Four Australian nationals have been deported after participating in a protest held at Sorong City Mayor’s Office on August 27, where protesters demanded the independence of Papua.

The deportation of the four Australians was immediately conducted on Monday morning at 07:00 local time, September 2, at the Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong, Papua.

This was confirmed by Immigration Directorate General spokesman Sam Fernando to Tempo today, “That is affirmative,” he said.

Those deported are Baxter Tom, Davidson Cheryl Melinda, Hellyer Danielle Joy, and Cobbold Ruth Irene. Three of them were equipped with exemption visas for short-term stay.

From Domine Eduard Osok Airport, the three Australians will transit at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, before continuing their flight to Sydney at 22:25 Central Indonesia Time (WITA). Meanwhile, Davidson will reportedly be flown to Australia on September 4.
