TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The price of chicken has again experienced a significant drop below the primary production price (HPP) on Saturday, August 31. Poultry farmers expressed complaints and planned to give away chickens free of charge.

The Indonesian Poultry Association (Pinsar) of Central Java chapter head, Parjuni, explained that after July, the price of chicken reached a proper rate at Rp20,000-Rp21,000 per kilogram. However, the price is decreasing and even far below the HPP recently.a

“On Thursday, August 29, the price for the outer region reached Rp10,000/kg and for locals at Rp12,000/kg, while the HPP is Rp17,500-Rp18,000/kg. This means the price declines again,” said Parjuni to Indonesia Business Information Network (JIBI), Saturday, August 31.

He said the drop began in the middle of August 2019 and was allegedly caused by an imbalance between supply and demand in the public following halt in the seeding policy.

“Since January 2019, only the price in July that saw an increase, it was just a solace. Now the price is similar to that of September 2018 when we give away chickens for free because of a sharp drop,” he added.

Poultry farmers planned to hold a peaceful act in a protest to the government regarding the declining condition of livestock. The event will be held on September 5 in Jakarta and Soloraya on Sunday, September 1.
