TEMPO.CO, Jayapura - People in Jayapura, Papua, fled their homes as a result of the riot that broke out today, August 29. Those from Entrop decided to stay a night in the TNI's naval base (Lantamal) X in Hamadi.

Most of the evacuees are women and children, while the men remain at their houses to stand guard.

Previous reports suggested that the rally in the capital of Indonesia's eastern province turned into a riot. The mass caused material damages in many areas from Sentani, Abepura, Kotaraja, to Jayapura.

Protesters also fired several buildings and stores along the roads of Abepura, Entrop, and Jayapura, including Telkomsel office, Jayapura post office, Bank Indonesia office branch, and shopping centers.

At around 18:00 local time, the mass started to disperse as the joint personnel of Police and Indonesian Military (TNI) repelled them by shooting tear gas.
