Mount Merapi Ash Clouds Cover 2 Km Area, Status Remains at Alert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Merapi erupted hot ash clouds reaching areas up to 2,000 meters from its crater on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at 18:09 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). This follows an earlier event on February 7, 2019.

Despite the ash cloud eruption, the volcanic mountain’s official status remains at Level II (Alert) with a safe minimum distance set at 3 kilometers from its crater.

“The status is still at Alert Level II,” said Hanik Humaida, Head of the Research and Technological Development for Geological Disaster Agency (BPPTKG) on Wednesday, August 28.

Mount Merapi's Level II status was announced since May 21, 2018, which is considered to be an extended duration for a volcanic mountain with no improvements or significant drop of activities throughout the time period.

The 2,968 meter-high mountain is located within four districts and two provinces in Java Island.
