Jokowi Calls for Stricter Regulation on Waste Imports

TEMPO.CO, Bogor - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi demanded imports of waste to be tightly controlled. Instead of imports, he called for enhancement in the potential use of domestic trash.
Despite being beneficial as raw materials for industry, imported trash might cause problems for Indonesia if it was not recycled properly, such as environmental damage and contamination from harmful substances for the public, he underlined.
He then outlined three ways the government must execute to well manage the import. “First, we have to maximize the potential of domestic waste for our industrial needs in advance,” said the President during a closed meeting in Bogor Palace, West Java, Tuesday, August 27.
The second step is to expedite the issuance of regulations in a bid to improve the management of waste imports. The last one, he demanded tight monitoring and law enforcement on the import as well as better coordination between ministries.
“Take firm actions if necessary when discovering violations in the field,” Jokowi asserted.
