TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An observer of terrorism from Padjajaran University, Muradi, deduced the future capital city in East Kalimantan will be safer than Jakarta as it has a lower potential of terrorism act and natural disaster.

“I think East Kalimantan is safer than Jakarta,” said Muradi to Tempo, Monday, August 27.

According to Muradi, security threats in East Kalimantan were domestic types and merely general crimes. Besides, it does not lie in the ring of fire with a high risk of earthquakes.

Whereas, Jakarta is vulnerable to natural disasters, and its location is no longer strategic as it is surrounded by satellite cities. “So, other than disaster risks, the dynamic of the metropolitan city is no longer considered convenient and secure,” he added.

As for national threats in the new capital, he opined it could be minimized by the establishment of a special command military as proposed by Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto.

“It (East Kalimantan) will have its special command military to oversee protection measures from national or global threats,” Muradi said.

On Monday, August 26, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced the capital city will be moved to Penajam Paser Utara regency and Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan Province. The relocation process from Jakarta is targeted for completion by 2024.
