TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has announced the most ideal location for the new capital city is in East Kalimantan province, precisely in the regencies of North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara.
“East Kalimantan has a low risk of natural disasters, be it forest fire or earthquake, and the location is also strategic as it is in the center of Indonesia, and close to developed cities,” said the President at the State Palace, today, August 26.
According to him, the planned relocation of the capital had been canvassed since the era of first Indonesian President Soekarno. He added that Indonesia had never designed the whereabouts of its administrative hub yet.
The President also mentioned that Jakarta had been completely overwhelmed with its status as the center of the country’s administration, services, trade, and finance. Besides, the city is also burdened with its airport and port.
Moreover, Jokowi continued, Java island was also overloaded, thus moving the capital city to any other location within the island would not change anything. "Java would still be burdened," he said.
