TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has opened the official quota for imported frozen beef from Brazil. Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita says the 50,000 tons of Brazilian beef import will be handled by three logistics companies comprising of; State Logistics Agency (Bulog), PT Berdikari, and PT Indonesia Trading Company (ITC).

“What is certain is the coordination meeting of coordinating ministers determined the import quota to be 50,000 tons from Brazil. Bulog will handle 30 thousand tons, PPI will import 10 thousand tons, and Berdikari’s quota will be 10 thousand,” said Enggartiasto at the Indonesia Great Sale opening on August 14.

Considering the vast distance needed for it to be imported, he says the government has decided to have the meat products will be imported in frozen form. “The journey will spend three months,” he says.

The beef import permit is set to be effective for up to the next 12 months.

Minister Enggartiasto strongly denies that this decision to import the Brazilian beef in massive quantities is a direct implication of Indonesia’s loss in the international lawsuit against Brazil in the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement council.
