TEMPO.CO, Malang - The management of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has given hikers a chance to commemorate the Indonesian Independence Day on August 17 at the 50,276-hectare national park area .

However, hikers are barred from holding a ceremony at Mahameru, the summit of Mount Semeru, and only allowed to do so at three out of the ten posts of the hiking trails, namely Ranu Pani, Ranu Kumbolo, and Kalimati.

“The farthest climbing is until Kalimati. This is based on the recommendations of the PVMBG (the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center) of Bandung,” said the TNBTS' management head, John Kenedie, Monday, August 12.

According to the PVMBG monitoring post, the volcano has erupted 17 times on average since August 8.

Therefore, the status remains at alert level 2 or Caution (Waspada). Locals and hikers are advised to stay vigilant of lava dome from Jonggring Solaka, the crater of Mount Semeru.

Hikers are also prohibited from conducting any activity within 1 kilometer from the mountain peak, which is the highest summit of Java Island.
