State Minister Draws Line on Marxism, Caliphate Discussions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Mohammad Nasir spoke about giving college students leniency to discuss contended ideals such as Marxism and the concept of a caliphate within the campus environment.
However, Nasir reminded that discussions regarding the two aforementioned ideals should be within academic grounds for the purpose of studying them rather than adopting its ideas.
“You are more than welcome to study them in campus, what’s not permitted is to adopt them as an ideology, because the nation has established the Pancasila and the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI),” said Nasir to Antara on Tuesday, July 30.
He also mentioned, academically dissecting and comparing countries that have adopted either of the two ideals is an example of using the two most debated ideals as a subject of knowledge.
Nasir reminds college students and academics that the line where it is deemed no longer acceptable is when the discussion of Marxism and Islam’s caliphate gets discussed outside campus walls becomes a public discussion.
“It’s considered propaganda if it is discussed outside [of the campus environment]. That is not allowed,” said Mohammad Nasir.
