TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, who is currently in Brooklyn, U.S. announced in his Facebook post stating that Jakarta will be hosting a race for the Formula E championship in the middle of 2020.

Alhamdulillah (All praise to God), it’s a success! A long negotiation process and persuasion that is met with a beautiful result,” said Anies in his post on Sunday.

After attending the World Cities Summit in Medellin, Colombia, Anies and his entourage traveled to New York to further negotiate with the organizer of the fully-electric open-wheel racing series. Formula E is known to hold races on street circuits.

The governor said that the meeting with the racing organizing committee was planned for three months prior and finally happened on July 13, as the sixth round of the race was held. Representatives of the Formula E championship had also undergone field-testing in Jakarta on July 8-July 9.

“This means the world’s eyes and cameras will focus on Jakarta, thousands of spectators from around the globe will be present. Jakarta will be [noticed globally],” Anies wrote.

A preliminary study suggested that one of the races held in Jakarta will help move the capital city’s economy for more than 78 million Euros (Rp1.2 trillion).
