TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) deputy head Shinta W Kamdani expressed her happiness upon President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s plan to tap his ministers from millennial generations.

Shinta rebuffed a saying that young age determined a person’s maturity to be a leader, let alone a minister. According to her, maturity and age are two different things.

“So it depends. I don’t want to see age as a benchmark,” said Shinta during a discussion in light of the President’s cabinet in the second term, in Millenium Hotel, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, July 3.

However, Shinta asserted that young ministers must have a clear track record and good leadership. Both are necessary because working in a bureaucracy with a high number of employees is not an easy task.

“It’s impossible for them if [they] don’t have leadership skills since a ministry is a huge organization. So, choosing a minister is not a trial and error, they must be able to work,” Shinta added.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry committee of employment, Bob Azzam, said that the president-elect’s plan to assign young ministers should be a breakthrough.

“[An appointment of] young minister should be a breakthrough and free from certain interests. If the two things don’t exist, it will be useless,” he said.

Bob reminded President Jokowi should also consider their teamwork ability and capability to form a synergy with other institutions or ministries because there still lack coordination between ministries to date.
