TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Merapi, Mount Merbabu, and the Menoreh Hills are set to be submitted to the UNESCO as biosphere reserves on September 2019 following a discussion on the matter by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) with Yogyakarta’s Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X on Tuesday.

UNESCO Indonesia’s national man and biosphere head of the committee and LIPI science deputy, Enny Sudarmonowati said that LIPI has met with the region’s administration to further discuss the plan.

The institute believes that the support and commitment shown by the regional government to the three biosphere reserves is dully needed to make a compelling case in the Man and The Biosphere Programme International Coordinating Council (MAB-ICC) UNESCO in 2020.

“Stakeholders at the biosphere reserve areas are hoped to support sustainable multi-party management,” said Enny after her meeting with the Sultan.

The three locations were chosen as they fulfill the requirement to become a biosphere reserve such as its biodiversity, biogeography, culture, and ecosystem.
