Data Show Consumers Prefer Minimarkets Over Supermarkets

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Ministry's Director General of Domestic Trade Tjahya Widayanti, said that people prefer to shop for groceries at a minimarket it is easy to access. Minimarket often located close to residential areas and they sell fast moving consumer goods ("FMCG")
"People nowadays prefer to shop for daily needs in minimarkets because they are closer to residential areas and are more practical because it eliminates the need to explore a large area to shop for things," said Tjahya to Tempo on Thursday, June 27, 2019.
He said that this phenomenon is evident in a Nielsen data showing the FMCG consumption among modern retail shops have grown by 6.6 percent, with minimarkets growing 12.1 percent while larger supermarkets and hypermarkets have negative growth of 6.8 percent.
Generally, the FMCG consumption in Indonesian retailers throughout April 2018 up to April 2019 has shown 1.8 percent positive growth despite the ongoing inflation. Such condition presents an improvement compared to the previous period that only records one percent growth.
"The prospect of retail businesses generally show a positive trend, which is evident in the growing consumption of everyday items," said Tjahya.
