TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has high hopes to restore Jakarta to an earlier condition in 1998 where half of the city residents traveled by public transport.

"At least it must return to 1998 where half of Jakartans traveled by public transport. Now, only 25 percent do that, while 75 percent use personal transportation," said Anies Baswedan at the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

According to Anies, the major contributor to the city's pollution come from motorized vehicles operating throughout Indonesia's capital city.

He said that the administration is attempting to suppress the number of personal transportation users by improving the quality of Jakarta's public transport.

Anies Baswedan is planning on completing his integrated public transportation program and bring half of Jakartans to use public transport by the year 2030.

Jakarta's current air quality is under the public spotlight after air quality forecaster AirVisual ranked it as the city with the most polluted air. AirVisual scored Jakarta's air quality index (AQI) 208 as of Wednesday, June 26, 2019, which is considered as unhealthy.

AirVisual ranked Jakarta in the top of the most polluted city list before Lahore in Pakistan, Hanoi in Vietnam, Dubai in the UAE, and Wuhan in China.

This condition basically advises children, adults, and people suffering from respiratory diseases to avoid prolonged outdoor activities.
