TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Professor Azyumardi Azra from Jakarta’s Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) urged for zero mass mobilization during the election dispute trial verdict at the Constitutional Court (MK).

“Let there be no more mass mobilization or rallies that could lead to public commotion and violence,” said Azyumardi in a press release on Friday, June 21.

The professor’s call was a direct response to the 212 group announcing its plans to hold a massive rally during the verdict reading at the MK headquarters.

Azyumardi called for everyone to be patient and wait for the legal proceedings at the MK to complete. The Indonesian majority, he said, is exasperated by political conundrums, especially if religion is dragged into the issue.

He predicted the 212 group’s intention is not to hold a normal gathering (halal bi halal), but rather an event that is driven by a certain political agenda. “It’s better to stop using words related to religious events for the sake of politics and dominance.”

Indonesian National Police Chief of Public Information Brig. Gen Dedi Prasetyo echoed the same sentiment and warned people to not hold any rally at the Constitutional Court on the day of the reading of the verdict.
