TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The legal team representing presidential candidates Joko Widodo (Jokowi) – Ma’ruf Amin says that the Indonesian 2019 presidential election was held in the midst of a rising post-truth politics.

They also mentioned the number of false narratives in the form of hoaxes that circulated throughout the presidential campaign.

“The greatest challenge faced in the 2019 general elections is the post-truth politics phenomenon that has arisen in the past years,” said the team’s lead attorney Yusril Ihza Mahendra at the Constitutional Court (MK) election dispute trial today.

Yusril talked about political elites that are responsible for maintaining Indonesia’s political realm to stay within moral values. Unlike the post-truth trend that entices the public’s political preference to be dominated by emotional factors rather than rational ones.

“The fire hose of falsehood method as a political propaganda tool shall never be practiced in Indonesia’s politics,” said Yusril. “We are eager to move on from the dark ages of hoax and post-truth that is slowly planting hateful narratives into the corners of social life.”
