BMKG Forecasts Adverse Weather Condition, Warns Homecomers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded possibilities of adverse weather conditions during the homecoming return period predicted to take place on June 6 until June 10, 2019. During that time, BMKG forecasted heavy rain and strong winds in regions across Indonesia.

BMKG Meteorology Deputy Mulyono R. Prabowo, in a written statement, said that the adverse weather conditions is due to the wet phase and activities of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon in the atmosphere, which can be followed by reduced wind speed, the formation of cyclones and wind divergence.

Areas affected by the natural phenomenon are predicted to include: Aceh, North Sumatera, Riau, Riau Archipelago, Bengkulu, Jambi, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central and West Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua.

"It can affect a significant increase of weather activities in several regions of Indonesia," Mulyono said on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.

Torrential rain is predicted to occur in Aceh, North Sumatera, Riau, West Sumatera, Riau Archipelago, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatera, and Bangka-Belitung. Also in all regions of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, up to Maluku dan Papua.

In addition to rain, strong winds are also predicted to occur in Banten, West Java all the way to East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South and Southeast Sulawesi, West, Central, and South Kalimantan, Maluku, and Papua.

Meanwhile, waves as high as 2.5 to four meters is predicted to occur in the West Indies Ocean on the wester part of Aceh, stretching up to West Indies Ocean on East Nusa Tenggara, southern coast of Java and Bali, southern part of Sunda Strait, Bengkulu, and Bandar Lampung.

Severe ocean conditions are also predicted to occur in Arafuru Sea, Sermata - Leti Arcihpelago, Babar, Tanimbar, East Banda Sea on Southeast Sulawesi, southern coast of Ambon, norther and southern part of Banda Sea, Kai Archipelago waters, and Aru.
