TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Marsudi Putra Handayani social service institution (PSMP Handayani) said they would return children to their families, if there is sufficient prove they did not take part in the May 22 riot. PSMP now has 52 children who were arrested by the police during the protest-turned-riot.

PSMS Handayani chair Neneng Hariyani said that they are now conducting initial assessments over the children's involvement in the riot.

"If the assessment result shows they were not involved, we will send the home," Neneng said on Tuesday, May 28.

According to Neneng, based on the preliminary assessment, some of these teenagers joined the riot on purpose, while some joined after they were asked to come.

"There are also others who said they just happened to be passing by the street but were then arrested. But whether or not they are telling the truth—we have to inquire futher," she said.

Neneng said PSMP Handayani will conduct further assessment to acquire the truth to discover which of these children were participants of the riot, or if they are victims or witnesses.

She added that the final assessment will be submitted to the police.

The children who took part in the riot, she said, would be rehabilitated for six months before they are allowed to return homw.

However, the children who committed vandalism and anarchy would be facing juvenile court.
